The Truth To Omega-3s
We’re tired of our patients being duped by smart marketing labels on omega-3s.
So many of them are taking over the counter omega-3 and fish oil supplements. But sadly almost NONE of them know how to properly use it.
It’s not their fault really! It all comes down to understanding how these products are labeled and marketed.
First off, let's talk about the proven benefits of omega-3s:
-> Lower cholesterol levels
-> Decrease blood pressure
-> Reduce inflammation in the body
-> And lower your risk of getting a heart attack
There are over 27,000 published studies highlighting these benefits, so we know they are good stuff!
But, we want to also make sure you are using them right.
Otherwise...what's the point??
There are 2 main things you need to be aware of:
The active ingredient in omega-3 and fish oil is actually EPA + DHA. So a product that advertises 1000 mg of omega or fish oil might actually only contain 200 mg of EPA+DHA if you read the label carefully. This means you need 5 pills to make up a 1000 mg dose of EPA+DHA!
In general, higher quality products will have EPA+DHA amounts closer to the total amount of omega or fish oil advertised (for example, 1000 mg will have 900 mg of EPA+DHA) whereas lower quality products will have lower amounts. So if you do buy a lower quality product, calculate how many pills you need to get your daily dose recommended by your doctor, which is usually at least 1000 mg of EPA+DHA.
The label might have big numbers saying 1000 mg or 2000 mg, but you really need to look at how many pills they consider a single serving. For example, a product advertising 2000 mg on the front of the bottle might actually mean you need to take 2 to 4 pills depending on what they consider the serving size.
Here is an exercise that we can go through together:
Using the label above, how many pills does one need to ensure they are getting 1000 mg of EPA+DHA?
If you answered 4, you are correct!
It might seem like a lot but this is typical of a low-mid quality omega-3 supplement. Only half of a pill (200+300 out of 1000 mg) is EPA+DHA, the rest are inactive omega-3s that are of zero proven benefit to the body.
So remember one thing: don’t let the marketing giants fool you with confusing labels!
